Outdoor Classroom
"Bringing Agriculture to Education"
Busy Barns Farm has numerous agricultural educational opportunities for school field trips, group tours and families. Our farm feels very strongly about providing education through experience. We do this through the unique farm activities we offer. These are just a few of the on-farm agricultural learning opportunities:
Educational signage on pumpkins, corn, wheat and farm animals- Sensory boxes filled with corn and wheat/oats
- Discovery nesting box filled with by-products of agriculture
- “Holly
the Holstein” a simulated milk cow who milks and moos
- Visit the gardens, pumpkin/squash fields and chrysanthemum field
- Trivia corn maze with true/false and multiple choice questions (fall season)
- Rhyming educational scavenger hunt (spring season)
- Free farm curriculum (links below) and Agriculture in the Classroom booklets (field trip students)
- On-farm educators (certified teachers weekdays and local FFA students weekends)
- Educational Puppet Theater - Fall 2011 show is titled "Once Upon a Swine" (weekends)
- Sheep Shearing Demonstrations - learn about the process and products of wool (weekends)
- Hog Hustle - learn about the swine industry then chase a pig (weekends)
Hands-on learning experiences are always best when students have been prepared for what they are about to encounter and are then able to discuss what they have learn afterward. Previewing and then reviewing the concepts presented at the farm will assist in reinforcing the material covered. We are pleased to offer our new fall curriculum guide "Swine are Divine" learning series to make your school field trip more exciting and memorable…as well as a better learning experience!
